Engagement Session at Toronto’s St Lawrence Area | Toni and Luisa

Tony was a Croatian-Canadian living in Germany, Luisa was Colombian. They met and fell in love in Mexico. Luisa followed Tony to Germany, both taking their chances in love.

It was one of the best decisions they’d ever made.

And they never looked back.

That was the gist of their story when I asked about how they met at our Skype consultation a year ago.  They were still living in Germany at the time so all their planning was done Online.  Since they were only able to come home to Canada a week before their wedding this past June, the only time we were able to schedule their engagement session was two days before their Canadian wedding. So when I photographed their session that day, it was also the first time I met them in person.

Engagement sessions are important to my process because I need to get to know my clients before their wedding day. On a typical wedding day, I only have at least 40 minutes to photograph the bride and groom, sometimes even less. I don’t have the luxury of figuring out what works for the particular couple on the day of. Don’t get me wrong, I can pose people easily but getting them to interacting with each so what you see in their photographs are genuine expressions so they don’t look stiff and “posed”, that part needs time. For me, expressions can make or break an image. A perfectly posed shot may look pretty enough but if the expressions of the subjects are blank or worse, forced, then the image is meaningless.

At least to me anyway.

That’s why I always insist on having an engagement session done with all my couples. Even if it was two days before the actual wedding date.

For Toni and Luisa, we decided to do their engagement session at Toronto’s St Lawrence Area. They liked how I had done a previous engagement session there before, so that’s where we went. Plus the weather network was calling for 60% thunderstorm that afternoon. Toronto’s St Lawrence Area has plenty of covered spots so even if we got caught in the rain, we had some backups.

Even if it was the first time we had met in person then, I feel like were kindred spirits. I mean they laughed at my jokes. That is saying a lot, I think.

Here are a few images from Toni and Luisa’s engagement session at Toronto’s St Lawrence Area.
