What to Wear on Engagement Sessions | Tips For Brides

Last time, I talked about choosing locations for your engagement session. This time around, I’m going to discuss something that I get asked a lot. What to wear on engagement sessions.

When you book an engagement session with me, I’ll usually ask you to plan on bringing at least two types of outfits. One casual, one dressy. You’ll wear the casual outfits to start then midway through the shoot, when we get to another location, you’ll get to change to the dressy ones. It’ll be around sundown by then so the dressy outfits will make it seem that you are both out on a romantic date night.

When it comes to colours, I’ll also get you to bring two sets — neutral tones and coloured. You can choose whatever combination you prefer. Casual/Coloured, Casual/Neutral, Dressy/Coloured, or Dressy/Neutral. If you’d rather wear colours in both types of outfits, that is fine. But try not to choose neutrals for both. It’s good to have some colour variety  in your photos.

Neutral Tones

Neutral tones consist of grey, cream, taupe, navy blue, white, brown, and black. Everything goes with neutral so you can’t really go wrong with these colours. However, try to avoid wearing head-to-toe black. All black clothing is not that visually interesting most of the time.

Colours

When choosing the right colours for your coloured clothes, the first thing you have to consider is the location where your engagement session will take place. If you’ve chosen a forest as one location, I recommend wearing jewel tones — rich blue, green, and red. Think sapphire, emeralds, and ruby. For sessions shot in meadows, with fields of tall grass and wildflowers, muted colours would suit the romantic tones of the landscape. In urban locations where you can pretty much guarantee that you’ll be surrounded by some type of concrete or brick walls, any colour would work. If you’re brave enough, go bright and bold.

Mixing Colours

Your outfit’s colours don’t have to exactly match. The important thing is that the colours you’ve chosen complement each other. If you’re not sure how to mix colours, one of the best website you can visit is COLOURlovers . You can browse tons of colour palettes that go well together for inspiration.

If you’re in the mood for shopping, the easiest way to get outfits for both of you is to buy them from the same store. There are tons of clothing stores that offer clothes for both men and women — Zara, H&M, Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic, and Club Monaco to name a few. These labels design their collections each season with unifying colour palettes in mind. In short, they’ve already done the work for you.

I hope you find this article helpful and answers the question about what you should wear for your engagement session!
