WPPI 2011 | A Photographer’s Story

As a photographer, I owe it to my clients to provide them with good quality photographs. In order to do this, it is my responsibility to educate myself of the industry’s standards and to learn from the best teachers that the Photography World can offer. WPPI is the biggest photography convention in North America and had been monumental in shaping my growth as a photographer.

This year’s WPPI has been an amazing experience for me. First, I had the privilege to attend Greg Gibson’s Plus Class on Capturing the Decisive Moment. Greg is a two-time Pullitzer Prize Winning photojournalist based in Washington, D.C. I thought that if I were to learn to be a better wedding photojournalist, Greg would be the ideal teacher.

Along with his colleague Brooks Whittington — who happens to be a great (militant) teacher as well — Greg and Brooks promised us a workshop that we would never forget. I’m not gonna go into detail about what we did, just in case one of you happen to take Greg’s class sometime in the future. But one thing’s for sure. It’s worth every penny and I’m so eager to practice what I learned in my upcoming weddings this summer. It also doesn’t hurt that I made friends in the process :)

Aside from Greg’s class, I was also able to attend several classes during WPPI including that of Jerry Ghionis and Jesh de Rox. Jerry’s class is always entertaining and I picked up a few tips on posing. As for Jesh’s class, I was pleasantly surprised at Jesh’s singing voice. Aside from being an amazing photographer, he’s also a wonderful singer-songwriter.

Even though my WPPI schedule was a bit hectic, I got a chance to meet other photographers as well. Also, hubby and I had a chance to go shopping (my Mastercard was harmed during this experience) and explore the wonderful cuisines offered in the Vegas strip!

Here are a few photos from our trip!

Las Vegas shopping mallIf you like tapas, you’ll love Julian Serrano located inside the Aria hotel. That pork and scallops dishes I had were soooo delicious! I also meant to photograph the paella we ordered but I didn’t remember to do it until it was all gone.

Delicious food at Julian SerranoProbably my most favourite restaurant in Vegas is Shibuya. Aside from offering the freshest fish for their sushi and sashimi, they also offer delectable desserts—- their tiramisu is to die for —  and Shibuya is the only restaurant I know that offer Hou Hou Shu sake. I’m not much of a wine/sake drinker but offer me a Hou Hou Shu and I will gulp the entire bottle no problem. I love it.

We were also lucky to get free tickets to Linkin Park’s concert at the MGM Grand Arena on the weekend of WPPI. My husband is a big fan and I do enjoy a few of their songs. It was a great show, great crowd, and great energy!

Linkin Park Concert Las VegasI was also able to witness a wedding during our class with Greg Gibson. Greg and Brooks photographed an actual wedding ceremony in MGM and we, the students, had the opportunity to watch them do their thing. Here’s a shot I took with my G11 from afar.

I already can’t wait for WPPI 2012!
